Final Fantasy II's story follows the adventures of four youths who's parents were killed during an invasion by the Empire of Palamecia, who are on the path to world domination.

The four characters play pivotal roles in the story of this world and in bringing the current events to a conclusion, as do a number of side characters who join them in their journey.

Characters

Firion

- The adopted friend of Maria and Leon, and childhood friend of Guy, he seeks to destroy the Empire to avenge his fallen family.

Guy

- A friend of Firion and Maria who was raised by wild animals before being taken in by Maria and Leon's parents. While his grasp of human language is limited, Guy has the ability to speak with wild animals.

Maria

- Firion and Guy's childhood friend, and the lead heroine. She quests to find her brother Leon, who disappeared during the four's escape from Fynn.

Leon

- Maria's older brother who disappears in the aerly stages of the game
